Endowed Scholarships with Applications

Below is a complete listing of scholarships that have an application. Please review the scholarship criteria. Most applications run the month of March with a few exceptions, such as those in the Emergency category.

Emergency

    The Class of 1965 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2014 by members of the Class of 1965 led by Barbara Brairton and Peg Heetmann in honor of their 50th reunion. The scholarship supports students who are juniors or seniors in good academic standing and at risk of not being able to return to school because of a lack of financial funding. This scholarship should serve as an emergency fund for anyone who meets the criteria above to afford a Mercyhurst education when not able to otherwise.

    The Emergency Book Fund was established in 2006 by Mercyhurst employees. The fund supports students who need assistance in purchasing textbooks.

    The Marion Boyd '39 Endowed Book Fund was established in 2001 by Marion Boyd. The scholarship supports students in financial need for the purchase of textbooks.

    The Betty Scarpo Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by Brent Scarpo in memory of his mother, Betty Scarpo, whose life was taken before her time. The scholarship supports students who are full-time and not the recipient of an athletic scholarship and have demonstrated an ability to make a difference in his/her community. The scholarship is restricted to students who are faced with an emergency family situation and at risk of missing or losing their place at Mercyhurst. Students should apply for the scholarship and should maximize all other loan and grant opportunities.

Majoring in Arts

    The Adria Stalsky Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 in memory of Adria Stalsky, an art therapy major who led an inspiring battle against cancer. The scholarship supports students who are undergraduates, majoring in the performing or visual arts, and physically handicapped.

    The Sr. Mary John Brown Scholarship Fund for Music was established in 2000 by Barbara Stone Pery '57 in memory of her Aunt Sr. Mary John Brown. The scholarship supports students who are majoring in music with the purchase of books, occasional fees, or whatever is needed.      

Majoring in Business

    The Alice Reeder Lockhart Scholarship was established in 2001 by Laurel Lockhart, Class of 1960, in memory of her mother, Alice Reeder Lockhart '34. The scholarship supports students who are female and in good academic standing, majoring in business, as well as were active in high school with community or volunteer service, which was very important to Alice.

    The Clara & Leonard Mattis Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2002 by Audrey Sitter Hirt '49 in memory of her aunt and uncle, who were instrumental in assisting and making it possible for Audrey to obtain her education at Mercyhurst College. The scholarship supports students with financial need who are majoring in (order preference) (1) Business education, (2) Psychology, and (3) Secondary education. To apply, students must have a 2.5 QPA and maintain a 3.0 QPA to continue to receive it. They should have a community/college service record and submit a letter of recommendation from two faculty members.

    The HBKS Wealth Advisors Endowed Scholarship was established by Chris and Greg Sorce, as well as HBKS Wealth Advisors. The scholarship supports students who (first preference) apply and are selected to complete an internship with HBKS Wealth Advisors, or (second preference) if no Mercyhurst interns are selected, the scholarship supports students majoring in business who are from Erie, PA.

    The Louis J. Tullio Scholarship was established in 1981 in memory of the late Louis J. Tullio, who was the Mayor of Erie. The scholarship supports a student in their junior year, majoring in political science or management, who will complete a faculty-led project for independent study. The project will identify an area of government in which there could be a significant improvement of efficiency increase in the quality of services and customer satisfaction.

    The Mary Catherine Lieb '42 Scholarship was established in memory of Mary Catherine Sherwood Lieb '42, who was a devoted alumna and Mercyhurst administrator. The scholarship supports students who are upperclassmen, majoring in business, as well as have a record of accomplishment and/or special promise for leadership.

Majoring in Criminal Justice

    The Dan Dascanio Law Enforcement Endowed Scholarship was established in 1986 by Dan's wife, Rose, and his brother, Bernard, in memory of Dan, who was the former Chief of Police at Presque Isle State Park. The scholarship supports students who are majoring in criminal justice with a preference to an Erie County resident.

    The James V. Kinnane Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Fraternal Order of Police; Swanson Memorial Lodge #48; Pennsylvania State Police of Erie; Crawford, Warren, and Venango counties; the William Tyler Lodge #64; and other friends of James V. Kinnane in memory of James V. Kinnane who provided the inspiration and leadership in establishing the Mercyhurst undergraduate program in criminal justice and the graduate program in administration of justice. The scholarship supports undergraduate students from Erie (excluding the City of Erie), Crawford, Warren, or Venango counties who are majoring in law enforcement.

    The R. Gordon Kennedy Criminal Justice Scholarship was established in 1974 in memory of R. Gordon Kennedy, who was a progressive and admired District Attorney of Erie County who exemplified a commitment to social justice. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need, in good academic standing, and majoring in criminal justice.

Majoring in Dance

    The Jenni-Lyn Watson Memorial Dance Audition Fund was established in 2011 by David and Jackie Watson in memory of their daughter Jenni-Lyn, who passed away while she was a student at Mercyhurst, majoring in dance. The scholarship supports students who are in their senior year. It is intended to support audition expenses with a $200 award. The awards will be administered by the Director of the Dance Department. Students are to provide receipt(s) to receive reimbursements from their individual awards.

    The Jane L. Barr Endowed Scholarship for Ballet was established in 1999 by Jane Barr. The scholarship supports two students annually who are in their sophomore, junior, or senior year; in financial need; and studying ballet or dance.

Majoring in Education

    The Annette R. Herman and Homer P. Herman Teaching Scholarship Fund was established in 1996 by Homer Herman. The scholarship supports students who are studying education, are in financial need and their junior or senior year, as well as have a 3.5 or higher GPA.

    The Clara & Leonard Mattis Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2002 by Audrey Sitter Hirt '49 in memory of her aunt and uncle, who were instrumental in assisting and making it possible for Audrey to obtain her education at Mercyhurst College. The scholarship supports students with financial need who are majoring in (order preference) (1) Business education, (2) Psychology, and (3) Secondary education. Barber. The scholarship supports students in the Special Education and/or Nursing field or students who wish to attend Mercyhurst University from Ireland and are committed to returning to Ireland to improve the lives of children in that country.

    The Gayle L. Cummings Martin Endowed Scholarship was established in 2020 by Col. Richard Martin in memory of his wife Gayle, Class of 1960. The scholarship supports students who are in their (order preference) junior, senior, or sophomore year; majoring in (order preference) nursing, health sciences, or education; as well as have demonstrated an active commitment to community service and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Secondary considerations are also given to graduates from Cathedral Prep and Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY; veterans of military service; or students whose parents are veterans of military service.

    The Patricia Ulrich Hausmann '54 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by Robert Hausmann in memory of Patricia. Patricia graduated from Academy High School in Erie and received her B.A. in elementary education from Mercyhurst in 1954. She taught at Glenwood and McKinley elementary schools. Patricia married Robert Hausmann in 1955. The scholarship supports students who are full-time in financial need, majoring in elementary education from Erie County.

    The Sitter Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2002 by Audrey Sitter Hirt, Class of 1949, in honor of the Sitter Family. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need and majoring in education. To apply, students must have a 2.5 QPA and maintain a 3.0 QPA to continue to receive it. They should have a community/college service record and submit a letter of recommendation from two faculty members.

Majoring in Hospitality Management

    The Jeffrey A. Gazica '84 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by Hooters of America in memory of Jeffrey Gazica, a Mercyhurst alumnus from the (then) HRIM program. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need, in good academic standing, and from the greater Pittsburgh, PA, area, majoring in hospitality management and/or culinary arts.

Majoring in Nursing

    The Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Scholarship was established in 1999 by John Barber, Irene Smerick, Ruth Pascarella, Mary Eisert, and Kathryn Barber Durkin of the Barber Center in Erie, PA., in honor of Dr. Gertrude A. Barber. The scholarship supports students in the Special Education and/or Nursing field or students who wish to attend Mercyhurst University from Ireland and are committed to returning to Ireland to improve the lives of children in that country.

Athletics

    The James McKeever Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995. Recipients of the James R. McKeever Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund must be in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher) and enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. The scholarship is restricted to students who best exemplify the spirit of the late James R. McKeever. It is required that recipients of this scholarship will have athletic involvement.

Travel

    The Anne Yeschenko Verbanick Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by Megan Verbanick in honor of Anne Yeschenko Verbanick. The scholarship supports students who are planning to study abroad to help offset costs. Additional criteria are that the students should be from the Pittsburgh area with a 3.2 GPA (first preference), from the Erie area with a 3.2 GPA (second preference), or a student with a 3.2 GPA (third preference).

By Heritage

    The Alfred Gino Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 by Alfred Gino. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need and of Italian heritage, as well as in good academic standing.

    The Dr. Gertrude A.     The John F. Kennedy Irish Scholarship was established in 1985 by Friends of Ireland in memory of John F. Kennedy. The scholarship supports students who are from Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland or are Irish/American and in good academic standing.      

    The WHISPER Organization Scholarship was established in 2007 by Women, Helping Interested Students Pursue Education Resources (WHISPER). The scholarship supports students who are minorities with tuition assistance, book assistance, and other personal expenses.      

By Need-Academic Ability

    The Ann Lecker '63 & Steve Jackson Academic Scholarship was established in 1988 by Anne Lecker Jackson '63 and her husband Stephen Jackson. The scholarship supports students who are in good academic standing. Financial need does not need to be a factor, but students should apply for the scholarship.

    The Guy Mancini Steelworkers of Erie County Scholarship was established in 1991 by the United Steelworkers of American District 10 in memory of Guy Mancini. The scholarship supports students who are in good academic standing and are sons, daughters, or steelworkers of Erie County.

    The Hanchin-Wells Endowed Scholarship was established in 2017 by Thomas Hanchin, Class of 1985. The scholarship supports students who are incoming freshmen with significant financial need. Students can apply and submit an essay outlining their academic goals and why they believe they qualify for financial assistance. Essays should be reviewed by a member of the Hanchin Family.

    The Jamie B. Yule Endowed Scholarship was established in 2003 by former students and friends of Jamie B. Yule, Ph.D., in honor of Jamie being a mentor, role model, leader, educator, and professional. As Professor and Chair of the Human Ecology Department, she set high standards for both herself and others, as well as fostered the professional development and personal growth of her students. The scholarship supports students who are attending Mercyhurst as a half-to-full-time student in their junior or senior year, as well as have financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students should apply for this scholarship by submitting a 250-word essay, sharing the students' statement of his/her professional goals and how those goals relate to strengthening families. The student should also submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.

    The John Lillis Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Lillis. The scholarship supports students who are from an Erie public high school, in financial need and good academic standing, and upperclassmen with good character.

    The Kelly Salvo Morey Memorial Fund was established in 2003 by Jeff Morey, Class of 1990, and funded through the KRM Breast Cancer Fund in memory of his wife, Kelly. The scholarship supports students who are directly affected by cancer, whether afflicted themselves or a family member.

    The Marion Boyd '39 Endowed Book Fund was established in 2001 by Marion Boyd. The scholarship supports students in financial need for the purchase of textbooks.

    The National Fuel Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by National Fuel. The scholarship supports students who are (1) Residents of Northwestern Pennsylvania (first preference), (2) Will be given to National Fuel employees and their immediate families, (3) Must be enrolled full-time (8 credits per trimester) with at least 30 credits and have a minimum cumulative QPA of 2.5, and (4) Have financial need.

    The Patricia Ulrich Hausmann '54 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by Robert Hausmann in memory of Patricia. Patricia graduated from Academy High School in Erie and received her B.A. in elementary education from Mercyhurst in 1954. She taught at Glenwood and McKinley elementary schools. Patricia married Robert Hausmann in 1955. The scholarship supports students who are full time in financial need, majoring in elementary education from Erie County.

    The R. Gordon Kennedy Criminal Justice Scholarship was established in 1974 in memory of R. Gordon Kennedy, who was a progressive and admired District Attorney of Erie County who exemplified a commitment to social justice. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need, in good academic standing, and majoring in criminal justice.

    The Richard S. Britt Memorial Scholarship was established in 2010 by Jeanette C. Britt in memory of her brother Rich, who exemplified the power, promise, and potential of every person who, at any age or state of life, commits to pursuing meaningful goals and dreams while understanding and accepting that hard work over long years, sacrifice, and persistence despite occasional setbacks are part of the path to true achievement. The scholarship supports students with financial need, particularly, adult and non-traditional students who have special or unique challenges to achieving their goal of earning a college degree.

    The Sr. Lisa Mary McCartney Senior Class Gift 2018 Scholarship was established in 2018 by the Class of 2018 as their Senior Class gift. They were the first class of many to begin a tradition of leaving an endowed scholarship as their Senior Class gift. The Sisters of Mercy have always had an enterprising attitude and do what they need to do. This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who also demonstrates this attitude, as well as an appreciation for the legacy and tradition established by the Sisters. Consistent with Mercyhurst's mission statement, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a true embodiment of the core values established by the Sisters. The student will also have an appreciation for the dignity of work that the Sisters of Mercy exemplify and be able to show how its mission has shaped him/her into the person he/she strives to be and is today.

    The Sr. Mary John Brown Scholarship Fund for Music was established in 2000 by Barbara Stone Pery '57 in memory of her Aunt Sr. Mary John Brown. The scholarship supports students who are majoring in music with the purchase of books, occasional fees, or whatever is needed.      

    The Westminster Group Scholarship was established in 2009 by Michael Redlawsk of James Properties and David Penman of Odyssey Builders. The scholarship supports students who are from Erie County who could not otherwise afford to live on campus. The scholarship is intended to partially offset the costs of living on campus.

    The WHISPER Organization Scholarship was established in 2007 by Women, Helping Interested Students Pursue Education Resources (WHISPER). The scholarship supports students who are minorities with tuition assistance, book assistance, and other personal expenses.

    The William & Martha Wurst Hilbert '59 Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by William and Martha Hilbert. The scholarship supports students who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference of student recipients are (1) Sons or daughters of PHB, Red Dog Industries, or Anson Mold and Manufacturing, as well as (2) Students in the Erie County, Diocese of Erie.

    The William Cochrane Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 by the Insurance Club of Erie County in memory of William Cochrane, who was a past President of the club. The scholarship supports students in their junior or senior year with financial needs who have an interest in a career in the insurance industry.

Misc. Need Qualities

    The AIM Program Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by donors who wish to remain anonymous. The scholarship supports students in the AIM Program.

    The Alice Reeder Lockhart Scholarship was established in 2001 by Laurel Lockhart, Class of 1960, in memory of her mother, Alice Reeder Lockhart '34. The scholarship supports students who are female and in good academic standing, majoring in business, as well as were active in high school with community or volunteer service, which was very important to Alice.

    The Class of 2019 Living the Dream Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019 by the Class of 2019 as their Senior Class gift. The scholarship supports students who are in their junior or senior year, planning to do an internship or fieldwork for academic credit, and willing to go the extra mile to live their dreams to the fullest, as well as have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The funds are to be applied directly to payment for the internship credits at Mercyhurst University. Interested candidates should submit an essay to illustrate not only what the opportunity is but how this opportunity helps them to live out their dream. Applicants will be required to submit two letters of recommendation - One focusing on their character and one focusing on their tactical skills in the area in which they will be interning/working. Selection is made by the Office of University Advancement and Office of Career and Professional Development.

    The Class of 2020 Mike Folga Legacy Scholarship was established in 2020 by the Class of 2020 as their Senior Class gift in memory of Mike Folga, who was a longtime hockey equipment manager and a member of the Mercyhurst Athletics Hall of Fame. The scholarship supports students who are in their sophomore, junior, or senior year, as well as have fought hard or are currently fighting hard to remain a student at Mercyhurst. He or she will be someone who overcame or continues to fight his or her struggles to be defined as illness, financial, etc. Students will apply and submit a brief narrative explaining the issue they are facing or have faced, as well as listing their campus activities and community involvement to demonstrate how they are still giving back to Mercyhurst and the Erie community while undergoing their transformative battle.

    The Class of 2021 Kenny Robinson Beat the Odds Scholarship was established in 2021 by the Class of 2021 for their Senior Class gift in memory of Kenny Robinson, who was a Mercyhurst student and baseball player who tragically passed away. The scholarship supports students in their sophomore, junior, or senior years and those who are examples of outstanding teammates, whether on the field or in life, who have overcome adversity and exhibit positive energy no matter the situation or obstacles they have had to overcome. Candidates should be people who put their needs second to anyone else's and are always willing to help someone in need. Interested candidates will write an essay about why they feel they carry on Kenny's legacy and qualities in their lives. The essay should describe an obstacle they have had to overcome and how they did so, as well as why they are a good teammate to those around them. A letter of recommendation is also required that affirms their qualities have been witnessed by others.      

    The Class of 2022 Patricia Jaskiewicz Scholarship was established in 2022 by the Class of 2022 as their Senior Class gift in honor of Mercyhurst receptionist Trish Jaskiewicz, who embodied the Mercyhurst spirit of community and welcomes all current and prospective students, as well as all employees to Old Main. She exudes the Mercyhurst core value of being compassionately hospitable and socially merciful through her positive demeanor and welcoming attitude. Trish makes "Hurst Home." The scholarship supports students who are in financial need and exudes the Mercyhurst core values of both compassionately hospitable and socially merciful. The students should be both welcoming and involved, as well as impact the Mercyhurst community with positivity, just as Trish did every day at the front of Old Main. The students should be involved in a leadership role on campus and have a cumulative GPA of 3.6. The student should exude the "Hurst is Home" message of Mercyhurst.

    The Florence U. Murray Scholarship Fund was established by the estate of Florence U. Murray, who was a church and civic leader in Erie, PA. The scholarship supports students who are from Erie, PA, and demonstrate a potential for service to humanity and excellent scholarly ability.  

    The Gayle L. Cummings Martin Endowed Scholarship was established in 2020 by Col. Richard Martin in memory of his wife Gayle, Class of 1960. The scholarship supports students who are in their (order preference) junior, senior, or sophomore year; majoring in (order preference) nursing, health sciences, or education; as well as have demonstrated an active commitment to community service and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Secondary considerations are also given to graduates from Cathedral Prep and Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY; veterans of military service; or students whose parents are veterans of military service.

    The Guy Mancini Steelworkers of Erie County Scholarship was established in 1991 by the United Steelworkers of American District 10 in memory of Guy Mancini. The scholarship supports students who are in good academic standing and are sons, daughters, or grandchildren of steelworkers of Erie County.

    The HBKS Wealth Advisors Endowed Scholarship was established by Chris and Greg Sorce, as well as HBKS Wealth Advisors. The scholarship supports students who (first preference) apply and are selected to complete an internship with HBKS Wealth Advisors, or (second preference) if no Mercyhurst interns are selected, the scholarship supports students majoring in business who are from Erie, PA.

    The Jamie B. Yule Endowed Scholarship was established in 2003 by former students and friends of Jamie B. Yule, Ph.D., in honor of Jamie being a mentor, role model, leader, educator, and professional. As Professor and Chair of the Human Ecology Department, she set high standards for both herself and others, as well as fostered the professional development and personal growth of her students. The scholarship supports students who are attending Mercyhurst as a half-to-full-time student in their junior or senior year, as well as have financial need and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students should apply for this scholarship by submitting a 250-word essay, sharing the students' statement of his/her professional goals and how those goals relate to strengthening families. The student should also submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor. 

    The Jenni-Lyn Watson Memorial Dance Audition Fund was established in 2011 by David and Jackie Watson in memory of their daughter Jenni-Lyn, who passed away while she was a student at Mercyhurst, majoring in dance. The scholarship supports students who are in their senior year. It is intended to support audition expenses with a $200 award. The awards will be administered by the Director of the Dance Department. Students are to provide receipt(s) to receive reimbursements from their individual awards.

    The John Lillis Scholarship Fund was established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Lillis. The scholarship supports students who are from an Erie public high school, in financial need and good academic standing, and upperclassmen with good character.

    The Kelly Salvo Morey Memorial Fund was established in 2003 by Jeff Morey, Class of 1990, and funded through the KRM Breast Cancer Fund in memory of his wife, Kelly. The scholarship supports students who are directly affected by cancer, whether afflicted themselves or a family member.

    The Kirk C. Hill Family Endowed Scholarship was established in 2020 by Kirk C. Hill, the Owner, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Wavepoint 3PL. The scholarship supports students who are in good academic standing, the children of grandchildren of employees of Wavepoint 3PL, or students who have graduated from North East High School or Cathedral Preparatory School.

    The Mary Catherine Lieb '42 Scholarship was established in memory of Mary Catherine Sherwood Lieb '42, who was a devoted alumna and Mercyhurst administrator. The scholarship supports students who are upperclassmen, majoring in business, as well as have a record of accomplishment and/or special promise for leadership.

    The National Fuel Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by National Fuel. The scholarship supports students who are (1) Residents of Northwestern Pennsylvania (first preference), (2) Will be given to National Fuel employees and their immediate families, (3) Must be enrolled full-time (8 credits per trimester) with at least 30 credits and have a minimum cumulative QPA of 2.5, and (4) Have financial need.

    The Robert B. Munson Endowed Scholarship for Deserving Adult Students was established in 1997 by Robert Munson, Class of 1994, a friend of the college and a President's associate. As Robert achieved his degree as an adult student, the scholarship supports deserving adult students.    

    The Betty Scarpo Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by Brent Scarpo in memory of his mother, Betty Scarpo, whose life was taken before her time. The scholarship supports students who are full-time and not the recipient of an athletic scholarship and have demonstrated an ability to make a difference in his/her community. The scholarship is restricted to students who are faced with an emergency family situation and at risk of missing or losing their place at Mercyhurst. Students should apply for the scholarship and should maximize all other loan and grant opportunities.

    The Sr. Lisa Mary McCartney Senior Class Gift 2018 Scholarship was established in 2018 by the Class of 2018 as their Senior Class gift. They were the first class of many to begin a tradition of leaving an endowed scholarship as their Senior Class gift. The Sisters of Mercy have always had an enterprising attitude and do what they need to do. This scholarship will be awarded to a senior who also demonstrates this attitude, as well as an appreciation for the legacy and tradition established by the Sisters. Consistent with Mercyhurst's mission statement, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a true embodiment of the core values established by the Sisters. The student will also have an appreciation for the dignity of work that the Sisters of Mercy exemplify and be able to show how its mission has shaped him/her into the person he/she strives to be and is today.

    The Westminster Group Scholarship was established in 2009 by Michael Redlawsk of James Properties and David Penman of Odyssey Builders. The scholarship supports students who are from Erie County who could not otherwise afford to live on campus. The scholarship is intended to partially offset the costs of living on campus.

    The William & Martha Wurst Hilbert '59 Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 by William and Martha Hilbert. The scholarship supports students who maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference of student recipients are (1) Sons or daughters of PHB, Red Dog Industries, or Anson Mold and Manufacturing, as well as (2) Students in the Erie County, Diocese of Erie.

    The William Cochrane Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 by the Insurance Club of Erie County in memory of William Cochrane, who was a past President of the club. The scholarship supports students in their junior or senior year with financial needs who have an interest in a career in the insurance industry.

    The William H. Albers Foundation Endowed Scholarship was established by the William H. Albers Foundation, Inc. in 2001. The scholarship supports students who are eligible for Learning Support services.

    The Anne Yeschenko Verbanick Endowed Scholarship was established in 2016 by Megan Verbanick in honor of Anne Yeschenko Verbanick. The scholarship supports students who are planning to study abroad to help offset costs. Additional criteria are that the students should be from the Pittsburgh area with a 3.2 GPA (first preference), from the Erie area with a 3.2 GPA (second preference), or a student with a 3.2 GPA (third preference).

    The Dan Dascanio Law Enforcement Endowed Scholarship was established in 1986 by Dan's wife, Rose, and his brother, Bernard, in memory of Dan, who was the former Chief of Police at Presque Isle State Park. The scholarship supports students who are majoring in criminal justice with a preference to an Erie County resident.

    The Dr. Gertrude A. Barber Scholarship was established in 1999 by John Barber, Irene Smerick, Ruth Pascarella, Mary Eisert, and Kathryn Barber Durkin of the Barber Center in Erie, PA., in honor of Dr. Gertrude A. Barber. The scholarship supports students in the Special Education and/or Nursing field or students who wish to attend Mercyhurst University from Ireland and are committed to returning to Ireland to improve the lives of children in that country.

    The Florence U. Murray Scholarship Fund was established by the estate of Florence U. Murray, who was a church and civic leader in Erie, PA. The scholarship supports students who are from Erie, PA, and demonstrate a potential for service to humanity and excellent scholarly ability.

    The James McKeever Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995. Recipients of the James R. McKeever Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund must be in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher) and enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. The scholarship is restricted to students who best exemplify the spirit of the late James R. McKeever. It is required that recipients of this scholarship will have athletic involvement.

    The James V. Kinnane Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Fraternal Order of Police; Swanson Memorial Lodge #48; Pennsylvania State Police of Erie; Crawford, Warren, and Venango counties; the William Tyler Lodge #64; and other friends of James V. Kinnane in memory of James V. Kinnane who provided the inspiration and leadership in establishing the Mercyhurst undergraduate program in criminal justice and the graduate program in administration of justice. The scholarship supports undergraduate students from Erie (excluding the City of Erie), Crawford, Warren, or Venango counties who are majoring in law enforcement.

    The Jeffrey A. Gazica '84 Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 by Hooters of America in memory of Jeffrey Gazica, a Mercyhurst alumnus from the (then) HRIM program. The scholarship supports students who are in financial need, in good academic standing, and from the greater Pittsburgh, PA, area, majoring in hospitality management and/or culinary arts.

    The Patricia Ulrich Hausmann '54 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 by Robert Hausmann in memory of Patricia. Patricia graduated from Academy High School in Erie and received her B.A. in elementary education from Mercyhurst in 1954. She taught at Glenwood and McKinley elementary schools. Patricia married Robert Hausmann in 1955. The scholarship supports students who are full time in financial need, majoring in elementary education from Erie County.
