Mercyhurst University hosts National Girls & Women in Sports Playday for Erie Area Youth

Mercyhurst University will host its annual National Girls & Women in Sports Playday on Saturday, Feb. 28, welcoming girls K-8 to campus for a day dedicated to achievements of women in athletics and the power of sports to unlock their limitless potential.

Families are invited to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC) for free activities hosted by women’s sports teams and organizations at 11 a.m., followed by lunch and free admission to the 1 p.m. Women’s Basketball game. The Lakers will host Stonehill College for their Senior Day game.

Founded by the Women’s Sports Foundation, National Girls & Women in Sports Day celebrates its 40th annual event with the theme “Lead Her Forward,” focusing on leadership and empowerment. Mercyhurst joins the celebration as one of hundreds of activity sites nationwide. The Women’s Sports Foundation reports that more than 300 grassroots events are hosted annually across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., reaching an estimated 200,000 girls and women.

“We are excited to invite our Erie community to celebrate and learn with our Mercyhurst student-athletes and staff. Honoring National Girls & Women in Sports Day through shared experiences is an impactful and meaningful priority for us,” said Suzy Banister, event organizer and academic community engagement coordinator.

“Active girls grow into confident women. Introducing fitness and play at a young age supports not only physical health but self-esteem, teamwork, and leadership—skills that last far beyond the court or field,” said Bethany Woods, co-director of the event.

Tickets for the event are free for girls K-8. Admission for adults to the basketball game is $10 and $5 for senior citizens.
