Mercyhurst Board of Trustees establishes Kathleen Getz Presidential Fund for Division I Excellence
Mercyhurst University’s Board of Trustees has announced the establishment of the Kathleen Getz Presidential Fund for Division I Excellence, recognizing President Kathleen A. Getz’s leadership during a defining period in the university’s history while creating long-term support for Mercyhurst’s Division I future.

The announcement was made during a celebration honoring President Getz’s service to the university.
Created in recognition of President Getz’s transformational leadership, the Presidential Fund will provide strategic support for initiatives that strengthen Mercyhurst’s Division I trajectory while advancing the university’s mission of academic excellence, student opportunity, and institutional sustainability.
The fund is designed to support evolving Division I priorities, including:
- Student-athlete academic success and leadership development
- Coaching excellence and program readiness
- Experiential learning opportunities
- Strategic initiatives that elevate Mercyhurst’s national visibility and long-term competitiveness
Under President Getz’s leadership, Mercyhurst completed its transition to NCAA Division I athletics, a milestone trustees described as one of the most significant moments in the institution’s modern history.
“The establishment of this fund reflects both appreciation for President Getz’s leadership and confidence in the future she helped shape,” said Joe NeCastro, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Her vision positioned Mercyhurst for national visibility and long-term opportunity.”
President Getz became Mercyhurst’s 13th president in 2021 and led the university through a period marked by institutional growth, academic innovation, and the transition to Division I athletics.

The Board of Trustees also recognized Sr. JoAnne Courneen, RSM, with the honorary title of Trustee Emerita in recognition of her longstanding leadership and service to Mercyhurst University.
