100 Acts of Mercy: Explore how the Mercyhurst community is making a difference

The 100 Acts of Mercy initiative at Mercyhurst University has taken off, with submissions pouring in from around the world!

The Sisters of Mercy would be incredibly proud to see the outstanding kindness and service our community exudes. The submitted acts encompass many of the Corporal and Spiritual Works and Critical Concerns of Mercy, including serving vulnerable populations, promoting kindness and empathy, and comforting those in need.

One participant shared her experience of caring for her husband post-surgery. Balancing a full-time career while serving as a family caregiver, her efforts extend well beyond just one Act of Mercy. By providing encouragement, support, and assistance, she completely embodies what it means to provide compassionate care.

While taking part in this initiative, she reflected on moral theologian and writer James F. Keenan’s definition of mercy: “the willingness to enter into the chaos of another.” She extended recognition to family caregivers everywhere who show mercy every day, often while juggling many other responsibilities.

Alzheimers Disease AwarenessAnother participant highlights their dedication to Alzheimer’s disease awareness, advocating for affected individuals and families. Their efforts aim to spread awareness in their community by participating in charity walks to raise funds essential for research and support.

Enaged Community MemberAnother submission features someone who serves as an engaged community member, balancing roles as an adjunct faculty member, paramedic, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer, and ordained minister. By supporting vulnerable populations, caring for the environment, and advocating to break the stigma of ethnic differences, they display many of the works of mercy throughout their daily life.

Students Campus MinistryStudents are also bringing this mission to life here at Mercyhurst. Members of Campus Ministry left positive notes around campus to uplift their fellow Lakers.

We encourage you to continue living out these acts and showing how much our community can achieve together.

Everyone is invited to join this campaign: students, employees, alumni, family, friends, teammates, clubs, and departments. Encourage others to participate and join the wide network of Mercyhurst community members living out the Mercy spirit!

“Every submission reminds us that mercy is something we do, not just something we talk about,” shared Bethany Woods, director of academic community engagement at Mercyhurst. “We’re grateful to everyone who has shared their story, and we hope many more will.”
