OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

Joseph G. NeCastro, MBA, was named interim president of Mercyhurst University following the retirement of the university’s 12th president, Michael T. Victor.

NeCastro is a 1978 graduate of Mercyhurst College (now Mercyhurst University). Appointed to Mercyhurst's board in 2011, he has served as its chair since 2018. He received a Distinguished Alumni award from Mercyhurst in 2016. He has taken temporary leave of his position as chair of the Mercyhurst Board of Trustees to serve as interim president.

NeCastro brings a superb record of executive leadership experience to the Mercyhurst presidency, following a nearly four-decade-long career in senior financial management with a variety of media and telecommunications companies. Before his 2016 retirement, NeCastro served as chief development officer for Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI), directing all international operations and investments of the company. He led the 2015 acquisition of TVN, the leading media company in Poland, and served as chairman of the board for both TVN and UKTV, one of the leading media companies in the UK market.

He previously served the E. W. Scripps Company as chief financial officer from 2002 to 2008, when he led the spinoff of the company’s cable television networks and online assets and the initial public offering for Scripps Networks Interactive. He was chief financial and administrative officer for SNI, which owned lifestyle cable channels including The Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel and DIY Network.

He held a number of positions with Reader’s Digest Association Inc. from 1993 to 1998, finally serving as chief financial officer for RDUSA, a $1.1 billion U.S. operating company, where he led major initiatives in strategic planning, value-based management, and inventory management.

After beginning his career as an accountant, NeCastro also held senior financial management positions with Comsat Corporation, MCI Communications Corporation and U.S. News & World Report.

A native of Erie, Pennsylvania, NeCastro holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Mercyhurst and a Master of Business Administration, with a concentration in finance and operations management, from Harvard Business School. NeCastro lives in Cleveland with his wife, Barbara, and their Portuguese Water Dog, Izzy. They have three grown children, Peter, Grace, and George.

While NeCastro serves as interim president, Mercyhurst University will continue its presidential search under the guidance of a committee composed of trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The search committee is led by Stephen J. Fiedler ’85, treasurer of the board, and board member Atty. B. Scott Kern in partnership with national search firm R.H. Perry & Associates. The search is expected to take approximately six months, concluding in summer 2021.
