Walker Recital Hall

Join us for the next installment of the Faculty Recital Series on Wednesday, October 15, at 8 p.m., in the Walker Recital Hall, when the annual Faculty Collage returns to the stage. Featured performers include Scott Meier, saxophone; Gary Viebranz, cimbasso; Jon Nolan, guitar; Hannah Bossinger, voice; and Nathan Hess, piano.

Hess will perform Professor Emeritus of Composition Albert Glinsky's Isla del Encanto (Four Pictures of Puerto Rico) for piano solo, a four-movement suite, in the premiere performance of a newly revised version. Preceding the performance, the composer will discuss the genesis of the work in a short audiovisual presentation, offering an inside look at how a composer finds inspiration and carries it through to a finished piece. During the talk, Dr. Hess will demonstrate a few examples of how sights and sounds such as the grandeur of the El Morro fort, the call of the Puerto Rican frog (the coquí), and the rolling waves at the beach in Yabucoa are transformed into notes and phrases within the work.

Other performances include an improvisation on a haiku by Scott Meier, saxophone; the Concerto for Contrabass Trombone with digital accompaniment by Brian Sadler, performed on cimbasso instead of tuba by Gary Viebranz; "In quelle trine morbide," from Puccini's Manon Lescaut, sung by Hannah Bossinger, soprano; and Suite populaire brésilienne for guitar by Hector Villa-Lobos, performed by Jon Nolan.
