Writing Center and Peer Tutoring Coordinator (NE)

Summary:

This employee will be responsible for the day to day operation of the Mercyhurst North East Peer Tutoring & Writing Center in order to provide tutorial services for students seeking further academic assistance.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The job includes the following duties and responsibilities.  Other duties may be assigned:

Writing Center:

  • Provide individual consultations in writing and presentation for all courses
  • Supervise a small group of student writing consultants
  • Provide students with additional resources for grammar and mechanics
  • Maintain Online Writing Center and provide electronic consultations
  • Promote services through targeted marketing strategies and outreach
  • Collect/Analyze data on students served and distribute weekly reports to faculty and administration
  • Contribute to Academic Success Center workshop programming

Peer-Tutoring:

  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and retain peer tutors in all majors
  • Collaborate with Erie campus to maintain CRLA International Tutor Training Program Certification
  • Lead College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) tutor training and TutorTrac training
  • Coordinate tutors’ schedules in TutorTrac
  • Accurate submission of student pay reports
  • Promote services through targeted marketing strategies and outreach
  • Collect/Analyze data on students served and distribute weekly reports to faculty and administration
  • Contribute to Academic Success Center workshop programming

Booster Programs- Allied Health Summer Science Booster

  • Recruit faculty and students to participate
  • Oversee payment of instructors
  • Organize and plan end-of-program event for participants
  • Assess outcomes of program and plan for subsequent (versions?)
  • Develop new booster programs based on student needs

Other

  • Collaborate with Academic Success Coaches and faculty to identify students in need of support
  • Track student progress and develop reports to show the impact of Tutoring Services on student success and retention
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in the field of English or a related field. Teaching experience in the area of writing preferred. Experience in an institution of higher education and/or academic tutoring preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of standard written English and grammar
  • Knowledge of writing center theory and practice, as well as tutoring best practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of student support programs and services
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and lead a staff of 15-20 students
  • Ability to develop and maintain a budget for a staff of 15-20 students
  • Knowledge of TutorTrac or other electronic scheduling system
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to student’s rights and responsibilities
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and administrators

 

Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

Current Act 153 Child Abuse clearances are required.
