Mike Kelly to speak at Mercyhurst Pre-Law Society inaugural fundraiser, networking event
The Mercyhurst University Pre-Law Society will host its inaugural networking and fundraising event on Saturday, April 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center for Academic Engagement, room 300. Special guest U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly is expected to speak to the gathering of students and invited guests at 6:30 p.m.
The event’s purpose is twofold: to provide pre-law students the opportunity to network with local attorneys, business persons, and representatives of organizations they may interact with as they pursue their legal careers and to raise funds to help defray some of the costs of taking the LSAT and applying to law school.
Guests will not be charged to attend the event, but donations are welcome. Undergraduate and graduate students are not encouraged to donate but use this opportunity to learn and network.
“Our organization is committed to making law school a reality for disadvantaged and marginalized students, and we desire to combat the rising costs of higher education and the law school admissions process by reimbursing Mercyhurst students for part of these expenses,” said pre-law senior and society president Mark Angelotti. “This fundraiser is just one small step we’re taking to make law school more accessible to underrepresented students.”
Pre-Law Society Adviser Dr. Eric Wagner said applying to law school can average upward of $400.
“What’s really admirable about this group’s event is that it won’t benefit them; most are seniors and are already set for next year, but they wanted to benefit those coming up through the ranks,” he said.
Meanwhile, Wagner said Kelly’s talk is nonpolitical in nature and geared toward the students and their prospective careers; he will speak about his life and his career as a businessman and congressman.

Attendees may contribute via cash, checks, or online gifts. Checks can be made out to "Mercyhurst University" with the memo: "Pre-Law Society."
