The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technician program at Mercyhurst is to prepare students to anticipate the healthcare needs of the individuals in the Pennsylvania and surrounding community. Our response is jumping into action to recruit and educate the diverse group of quality laboratory professionals seeking a better future for themselves and their community, while fostering collaborative relationships that generate new knowledge through innovation, technology, research, and education.

  • Medical laboratory technicians are one of the most in-demand positions in the healthcare industry
  • According to the American Society for Clinical Pathology, more than 70% of physician’s decisions and diagnoses are based on laboratory results

  • Each student is required to complete 400 hours of clinical work at one of the multiple facilities committed to working with our program

  • Graduates, upon successfully completing their program, are encouraged to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry examination in order to be a certified MLT (ASCP)

  • MLT majors may work in any section of the lab, from Hematology and Coagulation to General Chemistry Immunology, building skills in multiple areas of their field

Programming Update

Please note: Key components of the Medical Laboratory Technician associate degree program — including all program-specific requirements and laboratory work — are offered exclusively at Mercyhurst’s instructional site in North East, Pennsylvania. Other courses, including REACH Curriculum core courses and electives, can be completed either at Mercyhurst’s Main Campus in Erie or at the North East instructional site.
