Dr. Mahtab Athari, Assistant Professor of Finance in Mercyhurst’s Walker College of Business, earned her B.A. in Business Economics and an MBA with a concentration in Finance. Mahtab was awarded a Ph.D. in Financial Economics in 2015 from University of New Orleans. She also holds a Master of Science in Financial Economics from the same university. She is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and a member of the Investment and Wealth Institute. 

Prior to Mercyhurst, Mahtab was working at The University of Toledo and Cleveland State University as a visiting assistant professor where she taught Financial Management, Advanced Corporate Finance, Risk Management and Insurance, Investments, Money and Banking, and Financial Markets & Institutions in both undergrad and the MBA level. 

Mahtab has six years of equity analysis experience in a well-known Investment Company and overseeing capital markets in the Division of Enforcement in Tehran Securities & Exchange Organization, an SEC comparable organization, in addition to two years of experience in industry as an import/export analyst.

Mahtab has served as a committee member of several Finance conferences such as Financial Management Association (FMA), Eastern Finance Association (EFA), and Southwestern Finance Association (SWFA), among others. She also serves as peer reviewer in several Emerald Journals including Review of Accounting and Finance. As service to community, she is on advisory board of Erie County Career Pathways Alliance. 

Her research interests are forecasting equity returns, socially responsible investment funds, mutual funds, behavioral finance, and financial planning and household finance. She has presented her papers in reputable conferences in the US and has several publications in peer-reviewed journals.
