Titled one of 20 “new guitar gods” and one of the top 100 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, Nels Cline gained his widest fame as a member of the acclaimed rock band Wilco. In his work with Wilco and other groups such Quartet Music (Alex Cline, Eric Von Essen and Jeff Gauthier) and The Nels Cline Singers, Cline has become known for his cranked-up experimental sound, carving out a reputation as a major guitar and improvisation influence. Throughout his career, Cline has also undertaken projects highlighting an intimate, reflective approach that’s equally essential to his artistry.
Cline’s latest collaboration, as heard on the 2014 album Room, pairs him with 26-year-old guitarist Julian Lage. Hailed by the New York Times for the “disarming spirit of generosity” in his music and his “roots tangled up in jazz, folk, classical and country,” Lage joins Cline to create a world of melodic beauty, hard sonic edges and technical brilliance. Together, you can expect two guitar masters, spanning generations, leaping fluidly across genres in service of a guitar-driven experience. Arrive early an hour before the concert and enjoy complimentary beer tastings with Lavery Brewing Company and Erie Ale Works.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors/military and $14 for students/youth. For tickets, call 814-824-3000 or visit miac.mercyhurst.edu.
