In the winter of 1820, the whaling ship Essex was assaulted by a whale of mammoth size and will, with an almost human sense of vengeance. In the aftermath of the encounter, the surviving crew call into question their deepest beliefs as they’re forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Director Ron Howard’s crew includes Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Tom Holland and Ben Whishaw as a young Herman Melville, who sought inspiration from the Essex years later.
