Languishing in the summer TV ratings in 1968, ABC hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other: William F. Buckley, Jr., leading light of the new conservative movement, and leftist novelist and polemicist Gore Vidal. As their debates on political ideology sank into personal insult and vitriolic name-calling, viewers were riveted, sending ABC’s ratings skyrocketing. Directed by Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet From Stardom), Best of Enemies chronicles this infamous highbrow blood sport that marked the dawn of pundit television.
