Already garnering Golden Globe and Oscar buzz, Bill Murray shines in Theodore Melfi’s directorial debut as Vincent, a bawdy and hedonistic curmudgeon who agrees to babysit the son of his newly divorced neighbor (Melissa McCarthy). As Vincent and 12-year-old Oliver frequent bars, strip clubs and racetracks, the odd pair begin to help each other mature. The genuine chemistry is palpable between Murray and his co-stars McCarthy, Naomi Watts (as a pregnant Russian prostitute), and talented newcomer Jaeden Lieberher. Still, Murray’s physical comedy and unusually layered character steal the show in this riotous and decidedly unschmaltzy film.
