Lecture: ‘Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America on Foot’

Tuesday, October 14, 2014 - 7:30pm
Walker Recital Hall

In 2011 at age 23, Andrew Forsthoefel set out from his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, to cross the United States on foot wearing a sign that read “Walking to Listen.” He reached the Pacific Ocean almost 11 months later, having accumulated 85 hours of taped interviews and hundreds of unrecorded stories from the people he met along the way. Collaborating with Transom.org, he co-produced a radio documentary about his experience that was featured on the NPR radio show This American Life. Forstheofel, who plans to publish a book about the trip in 2016, will speak as part of Mercyhurst’s yearlong series of events on the theme of “Confronting Injustice.” The event, presented by the Campus Involvement Center and the School of Arts and Humanities with a Diversity Grant from the Office of Academic Affairs, is free and open to the public.
