Have a license to carry firearms? While some states require training for individuals obtaining a license, Pennsylvania is not one of them. Yet regional law enforcement and legal authorities underscore the importance of training. To meet that need, the Public Safety Institute of Mercyhurst University (PSI) is now offering a course titled Citizen Handgun Familiarization. The instructors are employees of the Police Academy with extensive experience in law enforcement, corrections and the military. The program includes two, four-hour sessions: one in the classroom, one with hands-on shooting. Cost is $100, plus 100 rounds of factory ammunition. Students may bring their own handgun to the second session. (It will be examined by staff prior to use.) A limited number of handguns are also available for use. Participants must complete the application and provide a copy of current driver’s license and concealed weapons permit.
