Who We Are

Mercyhurst University is a Fully accredited, four-year, Catholic, liberal arts institution founded in 1926 by the Sisters of Mercy. Mercyhurst has evolved considerably since, earning university status in 2012. Today we are home to more than 3,000 students, offering more than 50 undergraduate majors with 67 concentrations as well as unique adult programs and eight graduate degrees.


Our 75-acre main campus is in Erie, Pennsylvania, the state's only Great Lakes port city. We're approximately 100 miles from Cleveland, Ohio and Buffalo, New York and 130 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 

Admission Details

Mercyhurst is a competitive higher education institution. Campus visits are strongly recommended, and application requirements are listed below:

  • Mercyhurst University Application or Common Application. There is no fee to apply
  • Official high school transcript. Transcripts can be submitted electronically through Naviance/The Common App, eSCRIP-SAFE, or Parchment. Hard copy documents can be mailed to Mercyhurst University, Office of Admissions, 501 E 38th St, Erie, PA 16546
  • ACT or SAT scores. Test scores listed on official high school transcripts will be accepted.  Scores can be sent directly to Mercyhurst using SAT code 2410 or ACT code 3629
  • Test-Optional consideration request. We do not require the SAT or ACT for admissions. Students must sumbit the Request for Test-Optional Consideration to have test scores omitted from their application:  Test Optional Form
  • Untimed 250-word personal statement
  • Academic recommendation
  • Audition for Dance or Music students
  • TOEFL and/or SAT scores are required for international students

Mercyhurst accepts students based on rolling admissions:

  • Our recommended application deadline is March 1
  • Offers of admission are sent on a weekly basis beginning in early November
  • Accepted student reply date is May 1
  • Enrollment deposit is $400 (non-refundable)

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to visit campus when school is in session. Admissions appointments for prospective students are available Monday through Friday. In addition to campus tours and meetings with admissions representatives, arrangements can be made to attend classes and meet with faculty. There are also Open House programs available in the fall and spring of each academic year.

Clubs and Athletics

At Mercyhurst, 99 percent of students join a club or organization. Our more than 80 Recognized Student Clubs and Organizations (RSCOs) offer something for every interest, from Equestrian Club to Drama Guild. Athletics also play a major role in the life and spirit of the 'Hurst. In fact, 25 percent of our students compete in one of our 24 varsity sports, all of which are competitive in either NCAA Division I or II.
