BACHELOR OF ARTS
The accounting program at Mercyhurst ensures that graduates are competent in advanced theories, principles, and applications of financial accounting, including cost analysis, auditing and tax procedures. Majors must choose to pursue one of two tracks that will determine if they can practice in the private or public sectors. The first track (121 credits) will lead to the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam for those who wish to work in the private sector. The second track — a double major in accounting and finance, which meets Pennsylvania’s minimum 150-credit hour requirement — will lead graduates to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or the Certified Financial Planner exams for those interested in public accounting.
Mercyhurst offers specialized accounting courses in a beneficial learning environment - small class sizes that enable continuous student-instructor interaction, a technological infrastructure that supports emerging techniques, and a skilled and experienced teaching staff.
Students are introduced to the language of business and the principles of accounting and become professionally competent in advanced theories and applications of financial accounting, cost analysis, auditing, and tax procedures.
The accounting program is registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
The minor in business administration is open to non-business majors only. This minor includes eight courses (24 credits) designed to prepare students with general knowledge of the world of business, along with the communication skills and decision-making tools needed to succeed in business.
No minor course may be taken on a pass-fail basis, and students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the required business courses to meet minor program requirements.
