The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial financial and administrative leader who desires to work as a key member of the senior management team to drive the mission and strategic direction of the University in an increasingly dynamic higher education environment. In addition, the VP-CFO will develop content and oversee the preparation of financial analyses, modeling, and metrics necessary to support strategic decisions and will be regularly called upon to help fashion and promote the senior administration’s vision by presenting supporting data in a format suitable for sophisticated stakeholders and also, on occasion, present to other audiences who are not financial experts. The VP-CFO will be responsible for developing and executing a sustainable financial model for the University that anticipates and responds to the opportunities and challenges inherent in the contemporary higher education environment. The VP-CFO will also oversee the management of operating budgets and financial reporting, development of forecasts for the University that accurately anticipate risks and opportunities including return on investment and opportunity cost analyses for new and current academic programs as well as for other institutional initiatives. The VP-CFO oversees and ensures that the finance and accounting department, budget office, student accounts office, facility maintenance, food service and purchasing areas are operating efficiently, are accessible and user-friendly operations with open and effective channels of communication with faculty, students and other administrative units.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced financial executive with a successful record of managing diverse operations, broad intellectual interests and a personal commitment to sustaining and strengthening the distinctive identity and mission of Mercyhurst University. He or she will be a collaborative team member and skilled communicator of impeccable integrity. He or she will have expertise in financial management, accounting, strategic planning, budgeting, internal controls and regulatory compliance in the non-profit sector, as well as experience in managing an entity’s financial condition, investment decisions and risk management. The successful candidate is likely to have senior financial and operations management experience in higher education, but applications are welcome from individuals with relevant experience elsewhere in higher education, or in other relevant professional areas of financial administration.
A Master’s Degree in a related field or CPA status is required along with at least five years of senior administrative experience in finance and business, preferably in higher education; strong leadership and management skills coupled with excellent verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with academic financial management practices and NACUBO standards; demonstrated skills in management, planning and strategic analysis; commitment to educational goals and personal values; experience in investment oversight; experience in implementing financial systems; desire to contribute to educational leadership of a liberal arts university undertaking rapid change; ability to contribute effectively to a community that operates on Catholic values as well as transparent decision making and widespread dissemination of information. Must model behavior that reflects the highest ethical and professional standards, exemplifying best practices in job performance, supervision, and staff development. The ability to lead in a collaborative manner with a wide range of internal and external constituencies as well as excellent interpersonal and team building capabilities is necessary.
Compensation will be commensurate with the education, training and history of accomplishment of the candidate.
