More than 40 students and faculty from Mercyhurst University’s Department of Education and the Council for Exceptional Children rallied their volunteer forces to host Special Olympians at the 2023 Winter Olympic Games at Peek’n Peak Resort on Thursday, Feb. 9.

In partnering with the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania, the Mercyhurst group served as buddies to some 30 athletes from area K-12 schools as they competed in skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, with some athletes advancing to the statewide competition.

“The day was a valuable showcase of the abilities of the mind and body—for athletes and volunteers alike,” said Kortnie Fisher, assistant professor of Education and advisor for the Council for Exceptional Children.

Fisher said this marks the first time since February 2020 that the Special Olympians were able to participate in the annual event due to COVID-19.
