Members of the Mercyhurst University women’s ice hockey team will culminate a semester of volunteering at the Booker T. Washington Center (BTW) with a Laker Leaders finale on Thursday, March 30.
The Lakers will help children with their homework as usual beginning at 2:30 p.m. Then at 3:15 p.m., they’ll gather in the BTW gymnasium for a two-hour team-building exercise, said Mercyhurst student-athlete Jillian Skinner.
The participants will break into four groups, ranging in age from 6 to 12, and each will be led by a Mercyhurst Laker. They will play games, hold races and enjoy other activities designed to develop goal-setting, teamwork and leadership skills. Each child will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the day’s event.
“It gives us great pleasure to be role models and get to know these children,” Skinner said. “This event enables us to give back to the community and help others like so many others have helped us.”
Besides Skinner, hockey players who volunteered at the BTW Center this semester include Callie Paddock, Morgan Stacey, Sam Isbell, Sarah Hine, Nicole Collier, Paige Horton and Meg Whiddon.
Hockey Coach Mike Sisti said his players and BTW Center children both reap the benefits of this shared time together. “We always encourage our players to grow as well-rounded individuals who strive to excel in all areas of their lives,” he said. “Anything they can do to be role models and mentor younger kids is beneficial for everyone.”
