Mercyhurst University will soon introduce the new face of Laker spirit.
A new university mascot will make his first public appearance this Saturday at the Mercyhurst football season opener. The game, against Bentley University, will take place at noon at Mercyhurst’s Tullio Field. All are invited to attend and meet the new mascot.
The mascot, an Irish-born fisherman named Luke the Laker, has already been making himself known around campus through several social media posts this week, though not much is known about his appearance. Notable, Luke has an anchor tattoo on his left arm with the Roman numerals for “94,” an homage to the year of Mercyhurst’s first-ever mascot, The Old Man and the Sea.
Luke’s arrival comes on the heels of the loss of the previous Mercyhurst mascot, Louie the Laker, who had been the university’s mascot since 2006. Louie was destroyed in the February flood of the Carolyn Hermann Student Union. Like Louie, Luke will be a spirited presence at most Laker athletic games and community events.
