A story in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on open-source intelligence, which featured an interview with former CIA Director Michael Hayden, showcased the work of intelligence studies graduate student Melonie Richey, who used public information about terrain, roads, railways and infrastructure to build a computer model that predicted a path for the estimated 1 million Syrians spilling across Turkey's border. The story also quoted Richey's professor, Kristan Wheaton, J.D.
