‘Romeo et Juliette’ opera wins critical acclaim

Monday, January 2, 2017

The Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture will screen The Met: Live in HD broadcast of Roméo et Juliette on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 12:55 p.m. in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.

Gounod’s opera, which premiered in 1867, is still praised today for its remarkable musical take on Shakespeare. The current production, directed by Bartlett Sher, has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Diana Damrau (Juliette) and Vittorio Grigolo (Romeo) starred opposite one another in the Met’s 2015 production of Manon. Of their performances, the New York Times said, “The temperature rises nearly to boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together.”

Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, and $10 for youths. They are on sale now at or by calling 814-824-3000.
