Would you live in a bus if it meant free college tuition?

Eight or more hopefuls from the Erie area will get that chance this summer as part of the “Live in a Bus and Tuition’s on Us” contest from Mercyhurst North East and Happi 92.7 FM.

Beginning June 15, contest participants will live aboard a 48-seat school bus, 24 hours a day for as long as they can stand it, with the last remaining person winning free tuition and books for any one of Mercyhurst North East’s 30+ programs, a prize valued at more than $35,000.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Happi 92.7 for what will be a fun summer contest,” said Dionne Veitch, director of marketing at Mercyhurst University. “It’s a chance to generate excitement for the great learning opportunities available at Mercyhurst North East, and provide a quality education to a deserving student.”

The bus will spend a portion of each day driving around North East and Erie and parking at several high-traffic sites. Between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. every day of the promotion, the bus will park at a site to be determined on one of Mercyhurst’s campuses.

Contestants will be allowed several carefully timed breaks each day to use restroom and shower facilities. Aside from these breaks, however, the bus will be monitored around the clock to ensure participants don’t leave. Leaving the bus during unauthorized times will result in elimination from the contest.

“Spending your summer on a bus is an onerous task,” Veitch said, “so we’re planning some special activities and events to lighten the mood for our contestants and also get the Mercyhurst students and community involved in the fun. They could be on that bus for a while.”

“Live in a Bus and Tuition’s on Us” contest applications are now being accepted. Interested participants must make a 92-second application video, upload the video to YouTube and complete an online application at The deadline to apply is noon on June 12.

Happi 92.7 is no stranger to “live in it to win it” contests. In 2014, the Top 40 contemporary hits station held a similar contest to win a 2014 Chevrolet Spark. A 19-year-old woman lived in the mini-compact car part time for 37 days before winning.
