Performance evokes spirit of Christmas in Ireland

Thursday, November 16, 2017

Acclaimed Irish ensemble Danú will take audiences on a musical excursion to the Emerald Isle when the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture presents Féile Na Nollag: A Christmas Gathering on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center.

Christmas in Ireland is one of the most important times for families and friends. Holiday gatherings, in communities both urban and rural, have engaged generations in song, dance, music and stories. A Christmas Gathering offers a taste of these extraordinary events, creating a festive atmosphere of virtuosic instrumentals, spirited dancing and stirring vocals from Nell Ní Chróinín.

Hailing from counties Waterford, Dublin, Donegal and Cork, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. Their standing-room-only concerts throughout Ireland are anticipated events featuring high-energy performances and a tasteful mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire.

Since their creation in 1995, Danú has achieved a unique classical Irish sound thanks to a brilliant blending of flute, fiddle, button accordion, percussion and vocals. To date, Danú has produced eight albums, including Think Before You Think, which was named the Best Overall Traditional Act by the Dublin-based Magazine Irish Music in 2000.

Winners of numerous awards, including the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Danú has toured throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America, with stops at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Symphony Space in New York City and major concert engagements in the United Kingdom, India and Israel.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and youth 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased online at miac.mercyhurst.edu or by calling the box office at 814-824-3000.

The 2017-18 MIAC Live season is made possible through the generosity of Dr. & Mrs. Robert Guelcher, Cumulus Media and the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority. The performance is sponsored by McCreary Roofing, Laser Dentistry and WQLN. MIAC has also partnered with Radius CoWork for this performance.
