North East announces new programs

Thursday, May 1, 2014

A total of four new two-year programs, including one bachelor’s degree and three associate degree concentrations, will make their debut at the Mercyhurst North East campus in the Fall 2014 semester.

“For more than 20 years, Mercyhurst North East has been committed to offering a variety of affordable programs that will prepare students for a fulfilling and meaningful career,” said Travis Lindahl, assistant vice president for enrollment management. “We are pleased to offer more options than ever that will benefit not only our students, but also area employers who are seeking trained professionals in these in-demand areas.”

The new bachelor’s degree in health care science will serve as a completion program for students in non-nursing allied health fields to prepare them for positions that require bachelor-level preparation such as supervisory or management positions in their areas of expertise. The bachelor’s degree will be a convenient 2+2 track for students in Mercyhurst North East’s associate degree programs in medical lab technician, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapist assistant or respiratory therapy.

“There is a need for qualified leadership in health care to replace those who will retire with the wave of baby boomers, or just to keep up with the demand of the health care industry,” said Laura Merritt, program director for the health care science and medical laboratory technician programs. “It is our anticipation that graduates who have achieved solid clinical skills in our allied health programs and then go on to complete a bachelor’s degree in health care science will be prepared to step up into these leadership roles.”

Similar to the RN to BSN completion program – the one other bachelor’s degree offered at Mercyhurst North East – the bachelor’s degree in health care science is designed to meet the needs of working professionals through a Web-enhanced curriculum that combines online and face-to-face delivery of courses.

Two new concentrations in viticulture and insurance will fall under the existing associate degree in business administration. Viticulture students will learn about the science, production and study of grapes from the vineyard to production to the storefront, preparing them for jobs in the $340 million grape growing, juice/wine processing and agri-tourism industry in the Lake Erie region.

Insurance students will get the training they need to sit for the Pennsylvania health and life insurance licensing exams and work as independent sales agents or join the ranks of a larger financial institution.

One new concentration in facilities and property management will be added to the existing hospitality management associate degree. Facilities and property management students will study and practice operations management, construction/renovation, engineering, technology and interior design to prepare them to work as physical plant managers at large and small organizations alike.
