Mercyhurst mobilizes for grand send-off, players head to 2013 Frozen Four

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

The Mercyhurst University women’s hockey team brings the heat to the ice as they travel to compete in the prestigious NCAA Frozen Four tournament Friday.

The eighth-ranked Lakers will travel to Minneapolis to take on the third-ranked Boston University Terriers for the 9 p.m. (EST) game at the University of Minnesota’s Ridder Arena.

This marks the third NCAA Frozen Four appearance for the Lakers in program history, and the team’s first trip since 2010.  The Lakers advanced to the semifinals following a 4-3 overtime victory over Cornell on Saturday.

The Mercyhurst community will send off the student-athletes in style at a rally at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ice Center. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. Students, employees and alumni are encouraged to attend and wear their Mercyhurst green to show their support for the team as they board the bus to the airport.

To watch the game, log on to NCAA.com for a live feed. Mercyhurst students can head down to the Mercyhurst Athletic Center for a viewing party on Friday, sponsored by the Campus Involvement Center. Students can watch a live stream of the women’s game starting at 9 p.m. and enjoy free pizza, popcorn, soft drinks and spirit giveaways.

The winner of Friday’s Mercyhurst vs. Boston U. matchup will face the winner of the Minnesota vs. Boston College game at Sunday’s championship game at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

“The entire Mercyhurst University community is filled with admiration for the women's hockey team and for Coach Mike Sisti as they make their way once again to the Frozen Four national championship,” said Thomas J. Gamble, Ph.D., university president. “Congratulations ladies, and go Lakers!”
