Anderson Cooper is in the building!
As for the 15,000 other members of the media covering the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week, Mercyhurst University hospitality graduate Rosemary Macey ’13 has yet to spy other big-name personalities.
She caught a glimpse of CNN’s Cooper early on, but her responsibilities have left her little time for celebrity-watching. Macey is the catering sales manager for Levy Restaurants, which is based in the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, the GOP convention’s media headquarters and a popular backdrop for national TV broadcasts during the four-day event. The venue is just a short walk from Quicken Loans Arena, where the convention is taking place.
As sales manager, Macey is the point person for the food and beverage needs of thousands of reporters, photographers, cameramen, social media staff, broadcasters, bloggers and more. She was charged with organizing, planning and supervising the event, an enormous responsibility for a 25-year-old barely three years out of college.
She credits Mercyhurst for her success, including classroom instruction from dedicated faculty, hands-on experiences, two world-class internships and networking opportunities.
“I was gaining experience in the field during the four years I was at Mercyhurst, so I was light years ahead of others entering the field,” she said.
A native of Cleveland, Macey said her dream job was to work in catering at the new, state-of-the-art convention center, so to land it immediately upon graduation was a coup.
“I knew Mercyhurst hospitality graduate (Tony Prusak) was working at the convention center and he helped me make the connection for a job there as catering coordinator,” she said. “Within eight months, I was promoted to catering sales manager.”
She said the GOP Convention is her biggest gig yet.
“I have to manage a lot of different people, a lot of different personalities, and do my best to make everyone happy while also trying to show off the great city of Cleveland,” she said.
Earlier this year, Macey was one of the top five finalists for the title of Rising Star Corporate Event Planner of the Year.
She is the daughter of Carl and Toni Macey of Cleveland. She has two brothers, Michael and Danny. Danny is entering Mercyhurst this fall as a freshman and has eyes on following in his sister’s footsteps.
She said she’s ready to open the door for him.
