McDowell High School senior Jenna Uhlig was awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Mercyhurst University – the first such scholarship awarded a recipient of the annual Rotary Club of Erie Ethics Symposium for High School Students in partnership with the Evelyn Lincoln Institute for Ethics and Society at Mercyhurst.
Uhlig, who earned the scholarship as part of her participation in the 2013 ethics symposium, was honored during the 2014 event, held March 11 at Mercyhurst.
She told a crowd of nearly 300 high school juniors gathered at this year’s event that “Everything we do affects someone else … so why wouldn’t you want to make that influence a positive one?” She said the Rotary’s 4-Way Test, which is the organization’s code of ethics, can help guide people in that pursuit.
In making decisions and taking action, Rotarians are encouraged to ask: 1. Is it fair to all concerned? 2. Will it build goodwill and better friendship? 3. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? And 4. Is it the truth? The Rotarians talk to students about how the 4-Way Test has factored into their professional lives as part of the symposium’s agenda.
Uhlig, who maintains at 4.23 GPA at McDowll, is a member of the school’s honors college, a thespian and student ambassador. She also holds a part-time job in medical records. She wants to study education and mathematics at Mercyhurst.
The Rotary Club of Erie and Mercyhurst University have agreed to award one four-year, full tuition scholarship to Mercyhurst University to a participant in the 2014 symposium as it did in 2013. Only students who attend the symposium are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants are judged on the reflections of their experience at the symposium based on an essay and interview. Along with other school and community service work, these criteria will be used to select the student to be awarded the scholarship.
The scholarship has been made available through the support of E.E. Austin & Son, The Merwin Foundation, Eriez Magnetics, Mercyhurst University, Erie Insurance and Rotary Club of Erie Scholarship Foundation.
