Mercyhurst announces Class of 1937 scholarship bequest

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

Martha Mary Kettering Kessler, Class of 1937, has bequeathed $266,033.80 to Mercyhurst University for the Class of 1937 Endowed Scholarship, which supports rising undergraduate juniors and seniors who show financial need.

Kessler, who died Oct. 24, 2014, was the chief female probation officer for the Erie County Court System during the 1960s and 1970s. She graduated from Strong Vincent High School and then-Mercyhurst College. During her lifetime, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and Delta Sigma Sorority and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Erie.

“Mrs. Kessler’s generous gift will benefit so many students now and in the future,” said Mercyhurst President Michael Victor. “Not only will her gift make a difference in the lives of Mercyhurst students but, hopefully, will inspire others to consider how they, too, can make a contribution to enrich the exceptional educational experience Mercyhurst offers its students.”
