AT grads surpass national exam pass rate

Thursday, March 13, 2014

Graduates of Mercyhurst University’s Professional Athletic Training Program, taking the Board of Certification (BOC) exam for the first time, averaged a 96.97 pass rate during the past three years, significantly surpassing the national average.

BOC first-time pass rates for Mercyhurst graduates by class year were: 93.33 percent for 2010-2011, and 100 percent in both 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. By comparison, the national rates were 60.7 percent in 2010-2011, 82.3 percent in 2011-2012, and 80.85 percent in 2012-2013.

“With March being Athletic Training Month, now is the perfect time to focus on the success of our graduates,” said program director Suzanne Gushie, in recognizing the 34 students who have graduated from the university’s athletic training program in the past three years.  “Graduates have continued their post-baccalaureate education in athletic training, exercise science, physician assistant, physical therapy and chiropractic school.  We are very proud of our reputation and our alumni are our greatest asset.  As clinical undergraduate athletic training students at Mercyhurst, they become a family and create a bond with the university that allows for a unique learning environment.”

The program’s mission is to provide students with the necessary didactic and psychomotor competencies, clinical proficiencies and experiences required to sit for the BOC examination. And, as is the case university-wide, all students are guaranteed hands-on learning opportunities as part of their curriculum.

Athletic trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians and specialize in the prevention, emergency care, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and sport-related illnesses.

The BOC, a national credentialing agency, has been certifying athletic trainers and identifying quality healthcare professionals since 1969. More than 40,000 individuals have earned the ATC® credential worldwide.
