Four-term Congressman Glenn Thompson will visit Mercyhurst University on Thursday, Jan. 21, to meet with President Michael T. Victor on issues facing higher education today, to tour the Erie campus and to meet with students and faculty in a round-table discussion of issues important to them.
Thompson is a lifelong resident of Centre County, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education at Penn State University. From there, he went on to obtain his master’s in education at Temple University.
In 2008, Thompson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represents Pennsylvania’s Fifth District, which includes a portion of Erie County. Mercyhurst’s Erie campus is not within his district, but the university’s North East campus is. And, of course, many employees on both campuses, as well as students, reside in Thompson’s district.
Before his political career, Thompson spent nearly three decades as a therapist, rehabilitation services manager and a licensed nursing home administrator as well as a community leader and a volunteer firefighter.
As a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, one of Thompson’s fundamental priorities has been to ensure access to high quality and affordable education for more students.
Thompson is expected to be at Mercyhurst between 2 and 3:30 p.m.
