Hospitality unveils new Café Diem

MU Cafe Diem

The Mercyhurst family has another dining option with the Statler School of Hospitality Management's recent opening of Café Diem in the Center for Academic Engagement (CAE).

Located on the first level of the CAE, the Café Diem, features a variety of cold and hot breakfast and lunch items. The focus of the café is to offer more healthy choices, some of which include: sandwiches and wraps, fruit, yogurt, coffee and tea; however, pizza, cookies, muffins and hot chocolate are also available for purchase. Smoothies and soups will be added in the future.

The student-run cafe was formerly situated in Hammermill Library. Meanwhile, through word of mouth, several students have already checked out Café Diem’s à la carte menu, said Jessica Christofferson, Mercyhurst senior and café general manger.

“I know people are really excited, especially the Intel students who hope that we can extend the cafe’s hours,” she said. “The Café Diem provides hospitality students with additional hands-on food and business experience, and it’s also a convenience for students, faculty and visitors already in the building.”

The café is a student-run operation with approximately 15 students on board as managers, purchasers, staff and food preps. Students who volunteer may earn service hours through the café.

The Café Diem is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Currently, the café can only accept cash, but is looking to install debit, credit and One Card (Laker Loot only) capabilities in the future.
