Europol chief to address Mercyhurst Global Intelligence Forum in Ireland

MU Global Intelligence Forum

Rob Wainwright, director of Europol, the law enforcement agency of the European Union headquartered in The Hague, the Netherlands, is expected to address an estimated 180 panelists and delegates at the third biennial Global Intelligence Forum (GIF), The Dungarvan Conference, July 7-10 in Dungarvan, Ireland.

Sponsored by the Institute for Intelligence Studies at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa., the conference has welcomed a number of distinguished Irish intelligence leaders at past summits, among them Dermot Ahern TD, Irish Minister for Justice and Law Reform; Paddy Teahon, former Secretary General to the Department of the Irish Prime Minister; and Kathleen O’Toole, then Chief Inspector of the Garda Inspectorate.

Panelists for this year’s forum – “Preparing Intelligence Analysts for the 21st Century” – will address how leaders can effectively establish intelligence practices to enhance decision-making in a world marked by intensifying globalization and widespread influences of technology.

Wainwright, meanwhile, was appointed director of Europol in 2009 and is also an active member of the World Economic Forum, primarily on cyber issues. Between 2006 and 2009, he was chief of the International Department of the UK Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). Previous positions include director international of the National Criminal Intelligence Service and head of the UK Liaison Bureau at Europol. Earlier in his career, he served 10 years as an intelligence analyst in the UK in the fields of counterterrorism and organised crime.

Wainwright graduated from the London School of Economics, University of London, with a BSc. He is married with three children.

In addition to the Global Intelligence Forum, Mercyhurst will partner with the Lockheed Martin Center for Security Analysis to offer a two-day invitation-only colloquium July 11-12 for intelligence training leaders from the EU. The purpose of that event is to identify future intelligence training needs of that community of intelligence professionals.
