Albert Glinsky to write biography of music pioneer Robert Moog

Google is hosting a playable synthesizer on its homepage today to celebrate what would have been the 78th birthday of Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer, an electronic musical instrument that has changed the sound of popular music.

The Bob Moog Foundation also announced today that Mercyhurst University Music Professor Dr. Albert Glinsky is writing Moog’s authorized biography.

“I am extremely honored to tell the story of Robert Moog’s life and work,” said Glinsky, who also authored the award-winning biography,Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage, for which Moog wrote the introduction.

Moog, who visited Erie in 2000 for a music festival and was honored at several venues, invented a unique psychedelic sound adopted by a range of musicians from the Beatles to Herbie Hancock to the Beastie Boys. He died in 2005.

Glinsky holds his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from the Juilliard School and a doctorate from New York University. He has received critical praise for his music, which has been performed widely at settings like the Aspen Music Festival, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wolf Trapp, and in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and the Far East.

He has appeared on the Discovery Channel, the A&E Network, various National Public Radio programs, and on Canada’s CBC network and England’s BBC Radio. His book on Leon Thermin won the 2001 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award.
