Hungry to make a difference? Don’t miss the Project Kenya dinner on Friday, March 8, at Mercyhurst University’s Egan Dining Hall, a fundraiser for a student-led initiative to help a Kenyan girl afford a high school education.
The dinner, sponsored by Mercyhurst Student Government, runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10. The event includes raffles and a special acoustic set from Erie pop-punk band The Romantic Era, featuring Mercyhurst sophomore Colin Kimball on the keyboard.
The dinner features a Kenyan menu prepared by the university’s Parkhurst Dining Services, including Kenyan grape tomato salad; sukuma wiki (collard greens with onion and tomato); beans and rice; beef and irio (mashed potatoes with peas and corn); and kuku paka (Kenyan chicken curry).
For dessert, guests will enjoy mandazi (fried dough with cinnamon sugar) and Kenyan plantains in coconut milk.
Project Kenya benefits the daughter of Mercyhurst student Anthony “Juma” Khisa. The Kenyan native first came to the ‘Hurst to be at the graduation of his only sister, Sister Hellen Khisa of the Little Sisters of Saint Francis. read more here) – although his daughter remains overseas to finish her high school education.
Richard Molloy, Mercyhurst Student Government president and a senior competitive intelligence major, said he’s anticipating a near-sellout crowd for the March 8 dinner. The university has pledged to match all proceeds raised at the dinner, Molloy said.
“This is what the Mercy mission is all about,” said Molloy, who hails from Wexford, Ireland. “We’re ambassadors of service, and we’re joining forces to help someone in need.”
