Hockey mania at Mercyhurst: men head to semifinals

Men's Hockey

With the Mercyhurst women having already departed for the Frozen Four this weekend in Minneapolis, the men’s team is gearing up for its own big series.

Fresh off its exciting two games to one victory in the Atlantic Hockey Association Quarterfinals, Coach Rick Gotkin’s team departs for Rochester, N.Y., on Thursday, where they’ll meet Connecticut in the second semifinal game from the Blue Cross Arena at 7:05 p.m. EST Friday. In the other semifinal, Niagara will take on Canisius. The victors will play for the Atlantic Hockey Association Championship on Saturday night at 7:05, with the winner of the tournament earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I playoffs.

Fans on campus can view both the men’s and women’s games Friday night via a web-stream in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center (MAC). The men’s game starts at 7 p.m.; the women will be playing Boston University from Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., at 9 p.m., with the winner of that game advancing to Sunday’s NCAA Division I championship game.

Two giant screens will be set up in the MAC; free pizza, popcorn and drinks will be served.

In addition, both men's and women's hockey games will be carried "live" by WMCE, 88.5FM. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on Friday with the men’s game, which will immediately be followed by the women’s national semifinal game.  If the men win and play for the conference championship Saturday, that game will also be aired beginning at 6:50 p.m. If the women win, they will play for the national championship Sunday afternoon, with the pre-game show starting at 3:45 p.m.
