Girl Power! Youngsters flock to Mercyhurst for athletic celebration

Girl Power at Mercyhurst
Mercyhurst University student-athletes brought their A-game on Saturday when area girls came to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on campus.

This marks the second year that the Laker women’s sports teams have hosted the young visitors. The girls rotated through sport-specific stations throughout the Mercyhurst Rec Center where they got to try out equipment, learn some basic skills and – most importantly – interact with student-athlete role models.

Girls in attendance received free posters and had the chance to win T-shirts and autographed equipment from the teams. They also met Louie the Laker, the Mercyhurst mascot.

After the festivities in the rec center, the girls were given free tickets to the Mercyhurst-California (Pa.) women's basketball game at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day has been celebrated around the country since 1987, when it was established by the Women’s Sports Foundation to recognize current sports achievements and celebrate the move toward equality and access for women in sports.
