Announcing MIAC Live '14-15

The Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture invites education and entertainment to collide in its 2014-15 MIAC Live season.

The diverse, 13-performance lineup includes a live-action graphic novel, a display of architecture in motion from a Cirque-du-Soleil choreographer, a powerful one-man play about the state of the American healthcare system and a chamber music trio with a beatboxing flutist.

“We’re thrilled to invite these incredible artists to Mercyhurst University and to Erie,” said Christine Olivier, director of programming. “This season, we’re exploring what happens when artists push the boundaries of what’s expected in their genre. The individual performers are so diverse, but what unites them is their positions as innovators, creating at the threshold of the norm in their field.”

The excitement surrounding this season stems from more than the shows themselves. This year, 10 of the artists stopping by to perform will also participate in MIAC’s educational and community outreach initiatives on campus and in the Erie community.

Engagements include student stage tours of the enormous Earth Harp installation designed by William Close; movement workshops with dance company Diavalo to teach trust of physical space, community and the body with the Mercyhurst Learning Differences Program and the Sight Center of Erie; pre- and post-show panel discussions with Mercyhurst faculty; and more.

Two artists – Samite (November 2014) and Project Trio (March 2015) – will enjoy a weeklong stay in Erie through MIAC’s second annual artist-in-residence program, connecting them with groups at the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum, the Music for Veterans program, Collegiate Academy, The Mercy Center for the Arts and more.

For the second year in a row, the entertainment starts before the curtain goes up as MIAC Live ticketholders get free access to pre-show events. The rotating lineup of activities includes local music, hands-on demos with artists and local businesses, and refreshments from Mercyhurst’s food truck The Culinary Cab and the official brewery of MIAC, Lavery Brewing Company.

“The pre-show events were a huge hit last year,” Olivier said. “We’re excited to keep the tradition going and present our lobby as a community space where people can meet up with friends and make new ones.”

Next month, MIAC will unveil the schedule for its three-part Maria J. Langer Movies at Mercyhurst series: The Maria J. Langer Film Series (critically acclaimed independent world movies); On Screen/In Person series (documentaries featuring live Q-and-A sessions with their directors); and the Classic Film Series (old favorites once again on the silver screen). Additionally, MIAC will continue to present the popular Met: Live in HD series of simulcasts live from The Metropolitan Opera.

The 2014-15 MIAC Live season sponsor is Cumulus Media, with additional support from WICU/WSEE, Happi 92.7-FM, PNC Bank, WMCE 88.5-FM, Erie Reader, WQLN Public Media, Rick Griffith Properties, WJET/FOX, Scott Enterprises and Connoisseur Media.
