Buddhist monk to share lessons on well-being in the mind

Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche
Tibetan Buddhist teacher and monk Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche comes to the Carolyn Herrmann Student Union Great Room at Mercyhurst University on Tuesday, March 12, at 10 a.m. to present “Discovering Peace and Well-Being in the Mind.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Highly accomplished in meditation, philosophy and monastic arts, Rinpoche is the abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Woodstock, New York. He was ordained a monk at the age of 12 in Tibet. In 1975, His Holiness the 16th Karmapa acknowledged Rinpoche’s attainment with the title Choje Lama (Superior Dharma Master). At the request of His Holiness, Rinpoche immigrated to the United States in 1976 to establish and guide the development of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra.

Rinpoche is the author of Wish-Fulfilling Wheel, Practice of White Tara, a warm and straightforward account of the main deity practice of all four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism; and Taking Refuge: A Teaching on Entering the Buddhist Path, in which he describes how fully embracing the first formal step on the Buddhist path can lead to personal spiritual awakening and the enlightenment of all beings.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies at Mercyhurst and the Erie Karma Thegsum Choling, a Vajrayana Buddhist meditation center in the Tibetan Karma Kagyu tradition.
