As traditional as Jingle Bells, as festive as Santa Claus, as heartwarming as a child’s smile, Mercyhurst College’s celebration of “Christmas on Campus” is sure to be a memorable experience for more than 100 Erie area children who partake of the festivities on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carolyn Herrmann Student Union.
The Center for Student Engagement & Leadership Development, directed by Darcey Kemp, and a steering committee of student volunteers, including chair Kati Tompkins, plan the annual event. Donations from faculty, staff and administrators make the day possible.
As one of the college’s most beloved traditions, Mercyhurst students transform the student union into a winter wonderland where youngsters can get in the holiday spirit with a sing-a-long or dance performance, enjoy lunch, story-telling, gifts and, of course, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Every child is assigned a Mercyhurst student buddy. Representatives of the college’s Recognized Student Clubs/Organizations conduct games, crafts and other activities. The children represent nine Erie area social service agencies: The Boys and Girls Club of Erie, Booker T. Washington Center, House of Healing, House of Mercy, JFK Center, Martin Luther King Center, Mercy Center for Women, Neighborhood Art House and theYMCA.
