More than ever today, a business’ success depends on knowledge. The more effective a business is at gathering intelligence on its markets and competitors, the more enhanced is its competitive edge.
Two months ago, the nationally recognized Mercyhurst College Institute for Intelligence Studies (MCIIS) began an awareness campaign to illustrate how its success in intelligence education could be applied in the regional manufacturing and business community, and announced the launch of the Great Lakes Intelligence Initiative (GLII).
GLII’s ultimate goal is to create an intelligence-led business community in Erie that understands and effectively utilizes intelligence for global competitiveness and success, according to MCIIS and GLII director Robert J. Heibel.
For example, when Erie Press Systems sought to identify the global market for a product line of technology-advanced presses it manufactures in Erie, Mercyhurst intelligence studies students did the research and furnished “actionable knowledge” to the company’s decision makers. When J.H. Bennett Records Management of Erie wanted to ascertain its potential reach and customers, Mercyhurst students helped show the way. Those successful undertakings are just two of the numerous strategic intelligence projects MCIIS has provided local businesses and national and international organizations during the past two years.
As part of the ongoing awareness campaign on the value of business intelligence, GLIIhas teamed with the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership and the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania to bring Jan Herring, a pioneer and recognized expert in business intelligence, to Erie for an executive intelligence seminar. Herring will make two identical presentations, on Tuesday, Aug. 8, and Thursday, Aug. 10, in the Walker Recital Hall of the Audrey Hirt Academic Center on Mercyhurst’s Erie campus. A continental breakfast will be provided at 8 a.m. with the three-hour presentation to follow at 8:30. Parking will be available adjacent to the Hirt building, with the exception of the underground garage. The fee for this presentation will be $100 per attendee and reservations can be made by contacting the Erie Regional Chamber at 454-7191.
Herring’s presentation will educate attendees on the importance of business intelligence in decision making, strategic planning and overall corporate competitiveness, thus creating the necessary understanding and managerial support required to organize and operate a successful intelligence program.
Prior to establishing his own consultancy, Herring and Associates, LLC, Herring worked for The Futures Group (TFG), designing and developing business intelligence systems for a variety of industries, including aerospace, electronics, health care and insurance. Prior to TFG, he was director of intelligence at Motorola, where he developed the first modern business intelligence system using national security principles. Before Motorola, he spent 20 years with the CIA as a professional intelligence officer. There he set up the U.S. government’s first intelligence organization to assess the national security implications of foreign developments of civilian technology that could adversely affect the U.S. economy.
