What do “TTYL” (Talk to you later), “D-txt” and “Drive Smart” have in common? All three are organizations designed to put the brakes on the nation’s texting-while-driving craze.
The concepts were developed by Mercyhurst College students for the annual Communication Trade Show, slated for Tuesday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Great Room of the Student Union.
The annual event challenges teams of junior and senior communication students to create their own businesses – in this case, nonprofit organizations – from marketing materials to products, and unveil them at the trade show, where their efforts will be judged by Erie professionals and Mercyhurst alumni in the field. This year’s theme - “An Anti-Texting and Driving Campaign” - focuses on advocacy in the prevention of texting and driving.
The organizations created include Focus, ITXTL8R, D-txt, Drive Smart and TTYL Drive Now Text Later. Each identifies different methods of creating an awareness of the pitfalls of texting and driving and provides alternatives.
Besides learning sales, marketing and related communication skills, students participating in this year’s trade show have gone all out to share a very important message.
“It is our hope that this trade show will not only showcase our talented communication students but, more importantly, show our young drivers that no text message is worth causing a serious or even deadly accident,” said Dr. Anne Zaphiris, assistant professor of communication.
