Mercyhurst education dept. honored

Thursday, June 26, 2014

The Mercyhurst University chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, is one of nine recipients of the Professional Development Chapter Award for 2013-2014.

According to the society’s  notification received by Kathleen Bukowski, Ph.D., dean of the Hafenmaier School of Education and Behavioral Sciences at Mercyhurst, “This award is designed to recognize chapters for demonstrating excellence in programming by completing at least one outstanding professional development program. By selecting your chapter’s program as a recipient of this award, the review panel indicates that this particular program demonstrated diversity, was supported by experts, had alumni involvement and garnered feedback.  That is definitely something to celebrate!”

Bukowski said the honor celebrates the education department’s annual Teaching and Learning Expo, which will enter its 10th year in 2015. The expo exposes education majors to current topics in the field of education, with presentations from both new and veteran teachers, while providing a variety of practical skills they’ll use during their teaching careers.

“As their chapter advisor, it is such a privilege and a pleasure to work with these future teachers and witness the tremendous commitment they demonstrate to their future teaching profession,” Bukowski said.  “This experience allows them to utilize their leadership skills and interact with professionals while planning a conference for all of our education majors. They are our scholars and truly live the theme of our education department: TEACH. ANYONE. ANYWHERE.”

Mercyhurst’s chapter, Alpha Beta Pi, will be formally recognized at Kappa Delta Pi’s 2015 Convocation in Orlando, Fla.
