Fear Itself
The Great Depression, New Deal, and Today's Search for Economic Security
Throughout the 2009-2010 academic year, Mercyhurst College will host a series of programs and activities that address current issues of labor in the U.S. and throughout the Americas. "Fear Itself" is designed to raise awareness and increase understanding in our community regarding the nature of the 1930s economic crisis compared with our own, as well as the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of FDR's New Deal administration in responding to that crisis. The series will also focus discussion on historic and current issues of labor, the dignity of work, and economic justice.
All events are free and open to the community.
About
The academic year 2009-2010 will mark the 75th anniversary of the launch of the second phase of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. That anniversary, in combination with the current crisis in the global economy, has vaulted the New Deal and the lessons and legacies of the Great Depression era back into the national discourse. In particular, the condition of labor and the nature of unemployment and underemployment in the current economy are of great concern.
This series of events is meant to educate and enlighten students, faculty and the community at large on topics relating to the Great Depression, the New Deal as well as topics relevant to today's economic situation.
We hope that you will take time to enjoy one or more of the events prepared free of charge to the community.
