The Mercyhurst Theatre Program opens its 2015-2016 season with a performance of Brian Friel’s masterpiece Dancing at Lughnasa, directed by guest director Dr. Doug Powers. Dancing at Lughnasa is the story of five unmarried sisters eking out their lives in a small village in Ireland. The action is told through the memory of the illegitimate son of one of the sisters as he remembers the five women who raised him. He is only 7 in 1936, the year his elderly uncle returns after serving for 25 years as a missionary in Uganda, and his father, a charming Welsh drifter, strolls up the lane and sweeps his mother away in an elegant dance across the fields. Evening performances are set for Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 27-29, at 8 p.m., and matinees will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29-30, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $5 for youths and Mercyhurst students with ID. Call the box office at 824-3000.
