Biography

Critic, Floyd LawrenceFollowing graduation from Erie's East High School, Floyd Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and rose to the rank of sergeant while serving as a Marine journalist. He holds degrees from the University of Dubuque and Cornell University.

He also studied film criticism, production and history at the University of Southern Calif.. He taught English at the College of Wooster in Ohio and at Edinboro University for 17 years. For another 15 years he was director of public relations at St. Lawrence University in upstate New York and Occidental College in Los Angeles.

He once owned and operated a bagel shop in Lancaster (PA) County, where he also taught at a number of local colleges.

Since 1980, he has been a freelance writer for the Erie Times-News. Current assignments include film, theater, and restaurant reviews as well as occasional travel pieces. His hobbies include cooking, photography and travel.

He and his wife, Judy, a vice president at United Way of Erie County, share seven children and 11 grandchildren.
