World Languages and Cultures

Mercyhurst College offers the most varied and dynamic language programs in the region. With courses in 10 languages, we offer major programs in French, Spanish and Russian Studies (proposed 2008), minors in Asian Studies (Japanese/Chinese), French, Russian and Spanish, and introductory coursework in American Sign Language, Arabic, Italian, Latin and Turkish. The B.A. in world languages and cultures allows students to develop an expertise in one major language while also being exposed to introductory coursework in a second language.

Students can seek K-12 teacher certification through the B.A. in World Language Education in Spanish or French. Both programs offer courses in language, culture, literature and linguistics which prepare the student for professional or graduate work. The B.A. in Russian Studies combines coursework in the Russian language with courses in political science, history and linguistics.

In conjunction with the Walker School of Business, the department offers a B.A. in International Business, while studying Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian or Spanish. Many students majoring in other areas choose to complete a minor of eight courses in a language that will enhance their career and personal interests.

The department strongly encourages its majors and minors to study in the country of their target language. We work closely with students to help them find the program that best meets their academic and financial needs.
