CLEP at Mercyhurst

The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Developed by the College Board, CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program, available at more than 2,900 colleges and universities. Pass any of the 33 CLEP exams and achieve your college and career goals. www.collegeboard.com/clep.

The CLEP is a series of examinations in college subjects that allow individuals to earn college credits for what they already know regardless of how the knowledge was acquired – through advanced course work, independent study, work experience, professional development, or extracurricular activities.

Students from any college or university, as well as military personnel, can take a CLEP exam at Mercyhurst University’s open testing center. Mercyhurst students can earn credits for successful scores on CLEP exams (most are worth 3 credits but some are worth 6, 9, or 12 credits), and can earn a maximum of 30 credits from multiple CLEP exams. If you are not a Mercyhurst student, please check the CLEP policies at your school prior to sitting for an exam. CLEP exams are approximately 90 minutes long and are administered on a computer.

For Mercyhurst Students:

The cost for one exam is $80 to CLEP. The administrative fee is waived for Mercyhurst students; once you pass the exam, a $270 fee will be required to post the credits on your Mercyhurst University transcript. The $80 must be submitted prior to receiving a testing date.

Student Registration

For Visiting Students:

The total cost for one exam is $160. Of that, $80 goes to CLEP and a $80 administrative fee goes to Mercyhurst. The $160 must be submitted prior to receiving a testing date. If you’re not a Mercyhurst student, please check with your school in regard to any fees that may apply to post the credit on your transcript.

What is a Successful Score?

Your score report shows the total scaled score for each exam you took. Total scaled scores fall between 20 and 80. Passing score can be found at Scores to pass the exam and Class Equivalency. You receive instant score reports following completion of the exam, however, the official transcript from CLEP is received by the college or university that you designate approximately one week after taking the exam. Once the official transcript is received for a successful CLEP score, and you have paid a posting fee of $270, the credits are posted to your transcript. Mercyhurst students: Your GPA is not affected as no grade is assessed for the exam and unsuccessful CLEP scores are not reflected on your transcript. You may not repeat an exam of the same title within three months of the initial testing date.

Mercyhurst’s CLEP Registration Procedures

If you are interested in taking a CLEP exam, be sure to check with your advisor to ensure that the exam you are taking will meet the requirements for your degree. PLEASE NOTE: A Mercyhurst University student cannot take a CLEP exam and receive credit for a course in which he/she is currently enrolled and/or has previously received a letter grade (including, but not limited to, an F, W, PA, or I).

Once you have determined which course’s exam you’d like to attempt, you must go to the CLEP website to choose a course and testing center (in this case, Mercyhurst). Upon selection of the course and testing center, you will be required to pay the appropriate fee. Veterans may be eligible to be reimbursed for the cost of the exam. Once you’ve registered and paid the fee, you will contact Paul Hirsch, phirsch@mercyhurst.edu –or- (814) 824-2985, to schedule a date, time and location to take the exam.

On the day of the exam, you should arrive a few minutes prior to the start of the scheduled exam for check-in and instructions.

Be sure to bring your CLEP exam registration ticket and one form of identification. Acceptable forms of ID include passport, driver’s license, state or providence ID, military ID, national ID, tribal ID, a naturalization card or certificate of citizenship, or a College Board ID form. All DANTES-funded military candidates must present a current military ID. If you fail to present appropriate ID, you will not be tested.

Do NOT bring any of the following:

  • Calculators (a calculator function is built into the software for some exams)
  • Cellular phones/pagers, beepers, walkie-talkies, PDAs, or wireless communication devices (e.g. BlackBerry)
  • Digital watches (wrist or pocket), alarm watches, or wristwatch cameras
  • Any kind of photographic or copying device
  • Listening devices such as radios, media players with headphones, or recorders
  • Dictionaries, books, pamphlets, or reference materials
  • Papers of any kind (scratch paper and pencils will be provided)
  • Slide rules, protractors, compasses, or rulers
  • Food, beverages, or tobacco products
  • Hats (unless worn as a religious requirement)
  • Any other unauthorized testing aids
  • Any items brought must be left in the Office of Adult Student Services during testing.

Resources

Official CLEP study guides can be purchased at www.collegeboard.com/clep.

Each study guide includes an outline of the exam, sample questions and answers, and general tips for preparing to take the CLEP exams.

CLEP Exam Preparation Tips and Suggestions

  • Review the exam description online or in the CLEP Official Study Guide. How much do you know about each topic? Are you familiar with the terms, names, and symbols that are mentioned? If you are familiar with nearly all the material, you will need a minimum amount of review. However, if more than half is unfamiliar to you, you probably need to study extensively to do well on the exam.
  • Review the “knowledge and skills required” outline for the exam. This outline appears within each exam description that is contained in the study guides.
  • Answer sample questions in the CLEP Official Study Guide or in the Individual Exam Guides and use the answer key to determine your number of correct responses. Although these questions will not appear on the actual exam, the proportion of the sample questions you can answer correctly should be a rough estimate of the proportion of questions you will be able to answer correctly on the exam.
